In the Community

During the 2016-2017 school year, the Noisy Planet team has reached more than 1,500 kids in the Washington, D.C., metro area with our 45-minute classroom presentation about the causes and prevention of noise-induced hearing loss. Through hands-on activities, students learned about how we hear and about noise levels that can damage their hearing permanently.

To extend the reach of our community-based hearing loss prevention program, Noisy Planet is training health professionals and educators how to use our popular interactive activities in their schools and communities. In April, the Noisy Planet team led a train-the-trainer workshop for 30 school nurses, teachers, and audiologists in Fairfax County, Virginia. Workshop participants learned new strategies to incorporate fun and educational healthy hearing activities into their health promotion programs. Attendees were enthusiastic about sharing Noisy Planet’s messages and materials with their students and patients. One attendee noted that the presentation was “possibly the most practical and user-friendly presentation that I have ever been to!” The Noisy Planet team thanks Dr. Sheila Moore-Neff, educational audiologist with Fairfax County Public Schools, for organizing the event.
