Fun Activities and Safe Summer Sounds

The school year’s noisy cafeterias, marching bands, and gymnasiums are now replaced with the softer sounds of summer. Noisy Planet encourages you to explore quiet activities and vacation destinations with your children this year, including:

Family Camping On Beach And Toasting Marshmallows
  • Camping in the woods or even in the backyard. When you leave the sounds of the television and video games behind, you’ll be surprised at the variety of sounds you can experience around a campfire or even under a tree in your own yard. Take a hike or an evening bike ride around the neighborhood, make s’mores, bed down in a tent for the night, and listen to the many wonderful sounds of nature.
  • Heading to the beach. Do you prefer water over woods? The seashore can be soothing to many families with the soft, repeated sounds of waves against the shore and the call of seagulls overhead.
  • Visiting a museum. Kids can learn about anything they are interested in, such as American history, art, or airplanes. You might consider bringing a notebook and taking pictures so kids can share what they learned with their classmates when they return to school.
  • Reading a great book. Summer is a great time to dive into a good book. Encourage your children to pick a book about a topic they love. If you’re not sure what to read, you can always head to your local library, where the librarians will be happy to help you choose the perfect book. The library might even have a summer reading club you can join!

Take time to explore the unique sounds of summer with your children. Talk with your children about healthy hearing choices so they can enjoy their favorite sounds for a lifetime. For tips on starting the conversation, read Teachable Moments About Healthy Hearing.
