Noisy Planet Teams Up with ASHA to Protect Kids' Hearing

The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) is pleased to announce the partnership between NIDCD's It's a Noisy Planet. Protect Their Hearing campaign and the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). The Noisy Planet campaign aims to encourage parents of tweens (children ages 8 to 12) to teach their children how to adopt healthy habits that will help protect their hearing for life.

The collaboration reflects NIDCD's and ASHA's shared priorities and interests in reducing noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) through the promotion and dissemination of initiatives, messages, products, and materials. The partnership will help to extend the reach of the Noisy Planet campaign to parents and other adults who influence the health behavior of tweens, through ASHA's membership of audiologists; speech-language pathologists; and speech, language, and hearing scientists employed in schools, in health care facilities, in private practice, and at colleges and universities across the nation.

ASHA's efforts to reduce NIHL in children includes its "Listen to Your Buds" campaign, which targets very young children, parents, and educators, and has a goal of instilling in the very young healthy hearing listening habits when using personal audio technology.

Initially, NIDCD and ASHA will work together to promote the "Listen to Your Buds" Safe Listening concert, to be held Wednesday, April 29, at George Washington University's Lisner Auditorium in Washington, D.C. The free concert will be promoted to first- and second-grade classrooms in the Washington, D.C., area as a field trip destination. The concert will feature Billy Jonas, an acclaimed singer/songwriter, guitarist, and “industrial re-percussionist,” who is part of a national coalition of musicians assembled by ASHA and the Parents' Choice Foundation to promote the safe use of personal audio technology.

ASHA is the first organization to partner with NIDCD's Noisy Planet campaign. NIDCD is inviting a limited number of organizations with an interest in furthering a prevention message to become partners in the Noisy Planet campaign as part of their outreach efforts.
