Summertime is filled with promises of long, fun days packed with outdoor adventures and events that will make amazing memories. Summer music concerts and festivals are at the top of the list for many of us. Music festivals have become increasingly popular, and now feature a wide range of genres, from hip-hop or country to pop or classical. This summer, as you’re planning which concerts to attend, Noisy Planet encourages you to also make plans to protect your ears!

Crowd at an outdoor concert

Some concerts and music festivals can be very loud, with volumes around 94-110 A-weighted decibels (dBA). Research shows that anything louder than 85 dBA can damage your hearing. The louder the sound, the faster your hearing can be harmed. For example, at 110 dBA, sound can damage your hearing in just two minutes!

You can protect your hearing at summer concerts and other loud events by wearing hearing protectors. They come in different types: formable foam earplugs; pre-formed silicone, plastic, or rubber earplugs; or protective earmuffs. If you’re worried about missing out on the music with hearing protectors that muffle sound, try high-fidelity pre-formed earplugs, also called uniform-attenuation earplugs. High-fidelity earplugs maintain audio quality better than other hearing protectors because they lower the sound intensity more evenly across different pitches. Choose the type of hearing protector that best suits your needs so that you're more likely to wear them when you need them!
